Food Truck Skins Q&A: An Interview With Jon of Canawrap

Today’s interview is with Jon Glen, President and Creative Director of Canawrap, a Canadian company specializing in food truck skins and wraps. Jon was kind enough to answer some questions I asked him about the ins and outs of food truck skins.

Q. What kinds of food truck skins are there? Which kind do you recommend?

We recommend whatever skin design serves your brand message or attitude best. With our business, we really try to figure out how playful or reserved a food truck skin design should be. All this comes from communication with the owner. We almost always lean towards full wraps, which provide more bang for your buck!

Everything we design/produce is 100% custom, so the world is your oyster so to speak (delivered by a food truck of course). We can do skins for trucks/trailers/carts etc.

Q. What’s the most important thing to consider when selecting a food truck skin?

When your considering your food truck skin, brand, message, and communication is very important. We also really try to keep things simple and clear, as it’s very easy to get carried away when designing a truck skin. There is a lot of visual real-estate, so it’s easy to get excited, but it’s important to remember that keeping the food truck design clean should always be a priority.

A food truck skin should always be serving the food truck’s brand and theme. Of course you’ll also want to keep the physical elements of the truck unit in mind (ie. panels/doors that open up). You want to make sure you’re getting your message out there without cutting your logo in half while serving your food.

Q. How should food trucks decide what they want their wrap/skin to look like?

Your food truck skin design should start with developing the main concept behind your brand. Once you have a clear brand identity in mind, take the time to assemble your logo, message, and of course your product.

When you’re still new to brand development, it helps a lot to work with an experienced group. Experienced food truck wrap pros can talk everything over with you, and then the wrap creative comes together quickly and you’ll get something that will nicely tie in to your over all brand.

Q. How much does it usually cost to get a food truck skin? Is it really worth the price?

Food truck skin wrap pricing for creative (from an assembled brand), with complete production and installation can be anywhere from $3000 – $5,500 (of course it all completely depends on what is required at the end of the day).

It’s easily the very best money spent in the food truck industry, as people absolutely do judge a book by its cover. This is no different from how a person will judge a bottle of wine by its label or a restaurant by its menu. Your food truck skin can make or break a sale, and working with an experienced food truck skin wrap company is critical to get the very best results!
